Kyren Wilson is focusing on adding to his trophy haul after his recent Paul Hunter Classic victory in Germany. The 26-year-old from Kettering beat Peter Ebdon in the final, ending a three-year wait for his second ranking title after a 2015 Shanghai Masters success.
Wilson is currently in Bangkok for the Sangsom Six Red World Championship as he just beat Anthony McGill 6-3 in the last 16 round, before moving on to the new-look Shanghai Masters.
This year it’s a new chapter for that tournament as it changes from a ranking event to become snooker’s richest-ever invitation event, with a top prize of £200,000 up for grabs. Wilson is happy to have the Six Red World Championship as a platform to build for Shanghai.
“I have had time to get over the jet lag which was one of the main reasons I entered the Six Red event,” he said. “I love Thailand and the Six Red itself is a great tournament but it’s also really important preparation for Shanghai. Adjusting to the right time zone and getting over the long haul flight is a big factor.”
Beaten in the final of the Dafabet Masters last season by Mark Allen, Wilson wants to use his recent German success as a stepping stone towards the career success he craves. Being amongst the top-ranked players in the game is also a key goal.
“Since Shanghai in 2015 I have been consistent and competed in the later stages of tournaments regularly,” said Wilson. “It was annoying for me not to be able to turn that into trophies, until Germany.
“Now it’s all about building up my number of ranking titles, trying to win a lot more and compete with the very best players. One of my goals this season was to get into the top eight, and now I have achieved that I’m determined to hold on to it.”
Wilson is 23.00 to win this season’s UK Championship title.
