Wilson lives up to Warrior billing in Berlin win
Share:

Kyren Wilson went deep into his reserves and lived up to his nickname ‘The Warrior’ as he overcame David Gilbert for a 9-7 win in the D88.com German Masters final.

Wilson fell 7-5 behind against fellow Englishman Gilbert in a decider that became a battle of wills.

Seeking the third ranking title of his career, it was Wilson that started best and he grabbed four of the opening five frames to take control, notching half-century breaks in each of the frames he claimed.

Gilbert hit back with a 95 as he cut the gap to one but Wilson appeared to have stolen the momentum again with a 91 to lead 5-3 going into the final session.

Ranked ten places below Wilson at 19th in the world, Gilbert came out swinging and won the first four frames of the evening to lead 7-5 and get within two of victory.

Wilson hasn’t earned his title unduly though and he redoubled his efforts with breaks of 93, 54 and 70 to edge in front once more.

His 54 in frame 14 was an ice-cool contribution as he pipped Gilbert on the black to steal a vital frame.

With momentum at his back, Wilson took the all-important 16th frame in two visits to secure his second ranking success in Germany this season, adding to the Paul Hunter Classic.

Wilson is now one of only 26 players in snooker history to win three or more ranking titles and he was delighted with his success.

“It was a fantastic final with lots of big breaks and good safety,” said Wilson.

“We put on a good show for the German fans. I have always been a fighter and I dug in deep from 7-5 down. I felt it might be difficult for David to close it out because he has not won a title before.

“This is one of the biggest events outside the Triple Crown because we play in front of 2,500 people.

“I feel at home and relaxed here and that’s when my best snooker comes out. The atmosphere makes it so special. I’ll be full of confidence going into the next tournament now. I’m very proud of what I have achieved in the last three or four years, I’m only 27 and I’ve got many years ahead of me.”

Wilson is 17.00 add the World Grand Prix title this coming week, with Ronnie O’Sullivan tournament favourite at 3.40 and Dafabet Masters champion Judd Trump next best at 6.00.
