World number 11 Kyren Wilson survived the loss of the opening frame against Estonia’s Andres Petrov to win 3-1 and book his spot in the quarter-finals of the World Games in Wroclaw. Englishman Wilson now faces a tussle with Ireland’s Michael Judge in the last-eight, after the latter fended off a stern test from world women’s champion Ng On Yee to win in a deciding frame. Petrov took the opening frame in his match against Wilson, who struggled for his best form early on.
The latter was however able to find some rhythm as he compiled breaks of 81 and 54 to book his last-eight berth. There he will face Judge, who was forced to win a deciding frame against Yee. The Irishman opened up a two-frame advantage, aided by a break of 61, but his opponent responded strongly to level the match in her attempt to become the first woman to win in the snooker discipline at the World Games. The 2004 Grand Prix semi-finalist Judge recovered to emerge a narrow 3-2 winner and book himself a spot against Wilson on Friday in the quarter-finals. Iran’s Soheil Vahedi is also into the last-eight after he overcame former world number 14 Peter Francisco 3-1.
His reward is a duel with Switzerland’s Alexander Ursenbacher after the reigning European U-21 champion defeated former Crucible qualifier Andrew Pagett by the same scoreline. The quarter-finals start on Friday with two-time World Championship runner-up Ali Carter first up against Declan Brennan.
