Un-Nooh lives up to billing with Shoot Out success

He was already dubbed snooker’s fastest player but Thepchaiya Un-Nooh reaffirmed that status on Sunday by powering to glory in the Shoot Out, overcoming Michael Holt in the final.

Bangkok’s 33-year-old Un-Nooh duly hoisted his maiden ranking even trophy at the Watford Colosseum and walked away with the £32,000 winners’ prize in doing so. It was a landmark evening for Un-Nooh as he joined James Wattana as the only Thai players to win ranking events.

He also etched his name in Shoot Out history by compiling a rapid-fire clearance of 139 in his semi-final win over Jamie Clarke – the highest break recorded at the event in its eight years to date. In the decider, he made a fine break of 74 to edge out Holt in their one-frame finale.

The tournament has a unique format with all matches lasting a maximum of 10 minutes under shot-clock rules. The world number 53 was ecstatic to get his maiden ranking win on the board, nine years after he turned professional and he joked that the shot clock barely effected his play.

“I am so proud of myself. I have worked hard and have been looking to win this tournament. I told myself I could win this event many years ago,” said Un-Nooh. “I haven’t been close before, but this format is perfect for me. I can easily play with ten or 15 seconds. That is normal for me.”

It is 24 years since former world number three Wattana claimed his third and final ranking tournament success and Un-Nooh hopes his win will spark more success for Thai players.

“It has been a long time since James Wattana was the last player from Thailand to win a ranking title. I hope that this helps to make snooker more popular in Thailand. It would be good if this helps the Thai association to encourage more young players in the future,” he added.
