Trump talks up Warrior rivalry
Share:

Judd Trump negotiated his first-round clash at the Northern Ireland Open before stoking up a potential future rivalry with Kyren Wilson.

The pair met at last week’s Champion of Champions event in Coventry, with Wilson running out a 6-1 winner before going on to lose a thrilling final 10-9 to Ronnie O’Sullivan.

Afterwards, Wilson suggested he ‘wanted it more’ than Trump, something he felt was proved when he hit the practice table during the mid-session interval and his opponent did not.

World number five Trump beat Matthew Selt 4-2 on day two of the BetVictor Northern Ireland Open to book a last-64 meeting with Stuart Carrington, but afterwards the Bristol potter was questioned about the reaction to his recent loss to Wilson.

Trump, 29, has won eight major events already and suggests Wilson – who will turn 27 in December – has some way to go before matching his efforts.

“People are obviously saying that Kyren is the next up and coming star, but he is nearly my age and he has won nowhere near the amount that I have won.

“I think his personality and mine clash a little bit. People are looking for rivals going forward and we are probably going to be that.”

Pushed on Wilson’s suggestion that his practice table efforts in Coventry displayed an extra desire, Trump had a tongue-in-cheek response for last season’s beaten Dafabet Masters finalist.

“With his cue action, he probably needs the practice more than me,” he told Eurosport.

Trump is 7.50 to win the Northern Ireland Open in Belfast on Sunday.
