Judd Trump thrashed David Lilley 6-0 in his UK Championship opener but was unhappy with his performance.
The 2011 champion went into the first Triple Crown event of the season on the back of landing the Northern Ireland Open, where he saw off Ronnie O’Sullivan in the final.
Trump is 7.50 to win the tournament outright and despite hitting two century breaks in his win over Lilley insists he is capable of much better.
“I didn’t think I played very well, I made a couple of important clearances but otherwise I felt rusty out there,” said Trump.
“I got a bit of luck and the scoreline was flattering.”
The world number five will take on Dominic Dale in his next match at the Barbican Centre in York after the Welshman claimed a 6-4 win over Gerard Greene.
Neil Robertson, who won the UK Championship in 2013 and 2015, also managed a comfortable first-round win as he saw off Kishan Hirani 6-2.
Fellow two-time champion Ding Junhui fell at the first hurdle last season but never looked in danger of a repeat this year as he claimed a 6-1 win over Polish hopeful Adam Stefanow.
Robertson is 19.00 to win the UK Championship outright and Ding can be backed at 17.00.
