Trump relieved after ending trophy drought
Share:

World number five Judd Trump says it “feels amazing” after he managed to end his year-long wait for silverware with victory over Ronnie O’Sullivan in the Northern Ireland Open on Sunday.

Ahead of the event in Belfast, Trump last triumphed at the 2017 European Masters although he had made it to the quarter-finals in the China Championship, International Championship and Champion of Champions.

The 29-year-old, who was knocked out in the first round in last year’s edition, dispatched Matthew Selt, Stuart Carrington, Jack Lisowski, Luca Brecel, Ryan Day and Eden Sharav to set up a final against O’Sullivan.

In a ding-dong battle, the two Englishman traded blows to leave the scores level at 7-7 in the best-of-17 contest before Trump – who made centuries in frames four, five and seven – held his nerve to win the last two and record a 9-7 win.

The ‘Juddernaut’, who is 9.50 to win the 2019 World Championship, was elated to land his ninth ranking title and admits it is a big relief to be back in the winner’s circle.

“It feels amazing – it’s so nice to win again,” Trump said.

“I was very nervous in that last frame as it’s a while since I’ve done anything and I’ve had a bit of stick for underachieving.

“I got chances in the last few frames and just tried to hold myself together, I’ve always believed in myself but luck has not been with me. I wasn’t looking forward to this tournament after going out in the first round last year but the support I’ve felt this week has been unbelievable.”

O’Sullivan will feel he has missed out on a good opportunity to win his maiden Northern Ireland Open although he is still the 4.33 favourite to win next year’s Crucible spectacle.
