England’s Judd Trump made a perfect start to the German Masters qualifiers, beating Robbie Williams 5-2 in Barnsley on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old made an immediate response after losing in the semi-finals of the Scottish Open to Shaun Murphy.
Trump made a fast start, opening with a break of 82 before Williams showed his class by winning the next two frames thanks to breaks of 75 and 103.
However, Trump won four straight frames to take the match 5-2, with a break of 114 giving him the momentum he needed.
He will now take on the winner of Hammad Miah and Lukas Kleckers on Friday afternoon.
All players need to win two matches this week to make sure they reach the final stages in Berlin, with the full tournament taking place from January 3 to February 3.
World number five Trump was the highest-ranked player in action on day one, while Ken Doherty was also at the table. He beat Alan McManus 5-0 in a match between two players with a combined age of 96.
Doherty fired home breaks of 71 and 90 to set up a clash with Matthew Stevens later this week.
Welshman Stevens advanced into the next round of qualifying after securing a 5-3 win over Belgium’s Luca Brecel.
Englishman Kyren Wilson fell 1-0 behind before beating Ian Burns 5-1 thanks to breaks of 76, 56, 64 and 75.
Stephen Maguire advanced after compiling a 107 break en route to beating Daniel Wells 5-3 on Tuesday.
