Trump gains revenge over Wilson

Judd Trump has gained revenge over rival Kyren Wilson after claiming a 6-2 victory in the first round of the Dafabet Masters on Wednesday.

The match was a repeat of last year’s semi-final, where world number five Trump had held a 5-2 lead, only to see Wilson fight back and claim a 6-5 win to book his place in the final, where he was eventually beaten by Mark Allen.

That started a four-match winning run for Wilson against Trump, while the duo have also exchanged tense words in the media over recent months which has added some extra spice to their rivalry.

Trump certainly seemed extra motivated during Wednesday’s contest at Alexandra Palace and he raced into a 5-0 lead, producing breaks of 128, 58 and 81 in the process.

Wilson did win the next two frames, as he bid to secure another memorable comeback over his fellow Englishman, but Trump held his nerve and sealed the victory with a break of 72.

Speaking afterwards, Trump was quoted as saying by World Snooker: “It’s nice to win. I’ve lost the last few times against him and this is one I was really up for. I practised hard over Christmas and this was one I wasn’t going to lose. Neither of us want to lose to the other because of the rivalry.”

Trump’s reward for reaching the quarter-finals will be a clash with world number one Mark Selby on Friday and he knows the pressure certainly isn’t going to let up as he bids to claim a first Masters title.

He added: “I’ve never got to the final here. I’ve been close a couple of times. The draw is always tough, you’ve got a difficult game in every single match you play.”

Trump is priced at 1.95 to win Friday’s match, while Selby, who booked his place in the last eight with a 6-2 victory over Stephen Maguire, is available at 1.85.
