Trump battles into last-four
Share:

Judd Trump came from 8-5 down to defeat Mark Williams 9-8 and seal his place in the semi-finals of the Tour Championship in Llandudno.

Trump, who can be backed at 3.75 to win the Tour Championship, has enjoyed an incredible start to 2019 and he is looking to continue that momentum in Wales this week.

The Englishman kicked off the year with victory at the Masters before going on to win at the series-opening World Grand Prix in February.

But it looked like his run at the Tour Championship was set to come to an end in the quarter-finals when he trailed World champion Williams.

The pair were all square at 4-4 heading into the afternoon but Williams kicked on, sealing the opening frame with a century run of 103, before adding further breaks of 52 and 54 to open up a two-frame lead at 7-5 going into the mid-session.

World number six Trump appeared to be getting back on track when he moved into a 57-0 lead in the 13th frame, but Williams battled back with an astonishing clearance of 61 to go 8-5 ahead.

However, the Welsh favourite was unable to see the game out and Trump fought back to take the tie to a deciding frame. Both spurned opportunities before Trump eventually wrapped up proceedings in dramatic fashion to seal a last-four date with Ronnie O’Sullivan.

Trump said: “I’m over the moon to win that one. I was never really involved in the game so it was a bit of a get out of jail free card.

“I wasn’t that positive going into the interval. At 7-5 down, every time I played safe I was knocking balls over the pocket. I just relied on the fact Mark hasn’t played his brilliant best over the last six months so that was what I was holding that thought in my head, hoping he might miss a few. Fortunately that was what happened.”
