World number one Mark Selby has crashed out of the Sangsom Six Red World Championship in Bangkok after losing 6-5 to Tom Ford. The ‘Jester from Leicester’ arrived at the tournament in disappointing form after failing to advance past the third round of the World Open in Yushan.
Selby had come through his group without too many scares but he was edged out in a see-saw last-16 encounter against his fellow Englishman in Thailand.
Ford’s reward is a quarter-final against Luca Brecel. The Belgian potter played the more fluent snooker in coming through with a 6-3 win over Ryan Day of Wales.
The home crowd were treated in Bangkok as 48-year-old James Wattana rolled back the years in overhauling Zhou Yuelong of China to win a deciding frame and progress 6-5 from their last-16 affair.
Former world number three Wattana faces a stiff task in the quarters, where China’s Ding Junhui awaits following a 6-3 victory over former world champion Graeme Dott. Wattana has looked at ease in front of his home crowd and scored group-stage victories over Shachar Ruberg and Mark King, while losing to Stuart Bingham, in finishing second in Group C.
Ding, meanwhile, has charted smooth progress so far in the Six Red event, defeating Akani Songsermsawad, Mohamed Khairy and Jimmy Robertson to take top spot in Group E before seeing off Scotland’s Dott in the first knockout round.
Their dust down for the right to face either Ford or Brecel in the semi-finals is likely to garner plenty interest in Bangkok on Thursday.
