Selby finds a way past Carrington
Share:

World number one Mark Selby is through to the quarter-finals of the International Championship after a 6-3 win over Stuart Carrington.

Carrington reached a first ever ranking event semi-final at the Riga Masters earlier this year made a bit of a statement in the first round in Daqing with a win over world number 19 Anthony McGill.

The 28-year-old competed well on Wednesday but the world number 48 fell short against Selby.

The ‘Jester from Leicester’ is bidding for a hat-trick of titles in the International Championship after landing the titles in 2016 and 2017.

Selby managed two ranking titles last term and can match that if he takes the top prize in Daqing, although he could potentially face a stern test in the last eight with former world number one Neil Robertson a potential opponent.

The 35-year-old will take on either Robertson or China’s world number 68 Yuan Sijun in the next round.

Should Selby reach the semi-finals he will face either Jack Lisowski or Judd Trump in the last four and the top half does look to be the tougher side of the draw, although home favourite Ding Junhui and world number 12 Mark Allen are possible final opponents.

Selby disappointed in the Triple Crown events last season, as he fell at the first hurdle in both The Masters and the World Championship.

The three-time world champion fared a little better at the UK Championship as he reached the second round and Selby is 6.50 to take the title in York this year.

Ding is 13.00 to win the UK Championship outright and holder Ronnie O’Sullivan is the 3.80 favourite.
