England’s Mark Selby proved his class as he secured qualification for the knockout stages of the SangSom Six Red World Championship by beating Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon in Bangkok today.
The Jester from Leicester arrived at the tournament in disappointing form after failing to advance past the third round of the World Open.
Today Selby won 5-2 against Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon after firing in breaks of 61, 72, 58 and 59 against Gilbert to storm to the 5-1 win on Tuesday.
Elsewhere in group H, Mohammed Shebab just kept his place in the tournament by defeating Gilbert 5-4, finishing as the 2nd of the group while Selby sealed the top spot.
England’s Kyren Wilson is already through to the last 16 regardless beating Greame Dott 5-1 in their final match of Group D, as well as Dott who, even lost the game, also backed himself a qualifier spot since securing a 5-1 win over Singapore’s Marvin Lim Chun Kiat.
Meanwhile, James Wattana delivered the goods in front of his home fans as he beat Shachar Riberg 5-2. The Thai will qualify from Group C but Stuart Bingham still top the group after he cruised past Mark King.
The 42-year-old and former world champion has shown signs of his best form in recent weeks and he secured a 5-2 win.
