Record-equaling O'Sullivan dismisses 'greatest' tag

Ronnie O’Sullivan has dismissed talk he is the ‘greatest’ snooker player of all time after he equaled two records by beating Shaun Murphy in the UK Championship final on Sunday. ‘The Rocket’ secured a 10-5 victory over his fellow Englishman at York’s Barbican Centre, as he equaled Steve Davis’ record of six UK titles, as well as matching Stephen Hendry’s tally of 18 victories in snooker’s big three tournaments – the World Championships, the UK and the Masters.

The 42-year-old was understandably delighted to equal both records and he believes he is reaping the rewards for remaining at the top of the world game for over two decades. “The milestones I have reached are all good, and six UKs and 18 majors is testament to how long I have been in the sport and persevered at it. They are great records to have,” he told BBC Sport. O’Sullivan is also now just five adrift of Hendry’s record of 36 ranking-event titles, but he has played down talk that he is the best player ever to grace the game. He added: “I could never say: ‘I am the greatest.’ That is not in my personality.

I am just pleased I put in some great performances over the years.” The world number four can make further inroads on Hendry’s record by claiming overall glory at this week’s Dafabet Scottish Open – an event he has won on two previous occasions. First up for the Rocket is a clash with Cyprus’ Michael Georgiou on Tuesday and he is priced at 3/1 to go all the way and win the tournament in Glasgow.
