Joe Perry feels he must learn from a poor attitude that may have cost him success at the European Masters this season.
Perry lost the final to Jimmy Robertson in Belgium despite having gone in as a strong favourite to win. It was Robertson’s first ever appearance in a ranking tournament final and 44-year-old Perry admits that he let that factor into his own game plan.
The 2015 Players Champion was eager to make a fast start and pile pressure on his opponent but did the opposite, trailing 5-0 before rallying to a 9-6 defeat. ‘The Gentleman’ concedes that it was a costly mistake of his own doing.
“I think my results suffered in the immediate aftermath. No matter who I was facing in the final it would have been disappointing to lose. I think this was the first final I have ever been in where I was a strong favourite,” said Perry.
“It was Jimmy’s maiden final and I know what that feeling is like. I felt that the start of the match was really important. I put myself under so much pressure at the beginning of the game because I thought I could be almost home and dry with a strong start. That mental approach backfired.
“I actually got off to the worst possible start and went 5-0 down. That is hard to come back from. I should have just gone out and played as I normally would.”
Perry enjoyed a 4-1 win over Ashley Carty in his Indian Open first round match, notching an impressive 125 break along the way. He faces Li Hang in round two and is favourite to win at 1.50, with his opponent 2.50 after defeating Hamza Akbar 4-0 in round one.
