Pengfei aiming for more Belgium shocks
Share:

Tian Pengfei landed one of the biggest wins of his career to knock top seed Judd Trump out of the European Masters, and the Chinese will be looking to continue his giant-killing campaign against compatriot Liang Wenbo on Thursday.

Having already lost in qualifying for two events this season, little was expected from Pengfei at the Sportdienst – De Soeverein in Lommel, Belgium this week. The 31-year-old edged past compatriot Li Hang 4-3 in the first round, setting up a huge clash with defending champion and number one seed Trump, who had secured two 4-0 victories to reach the second stage of the tournament.

In a huge upset, the Chinese made a brilliant 112 century to record a 4-2 victory and send his English opponent, who recently reached the quarter-finals of the China Championship, packing.

Next up for Pengfei is a match against 17th seed Wenbo, who beat Englishman Alfie Burden 4-3 in R1 before easing past Irishman Fergal O’Brien 4-2 in the next round. Thursday will mark the fourth meeting between the Chinese, with Pengfei winning the most recent encounter 6-3 at the 2015 International Championship at Daqing’s Baihu Media Broadcasting Centre. Pengfei is the 2.30 outsider to pick up the win whilst his compatriot is the 1.60 favourite.

Elsewhere, Paul Hunter Classic champion Kyren Wilson ousted fellow Englishman Allan Taylor 4-2, booking a third-round clash with 2008 World Championship semi-finalist Joe Perry.

World number nine Wilson, who also landed the Six-red World Championship recently, is the 1.50 favourite to advance in the last-eight stage whilst his opponent is the 2.50 outsider. Thursday will be the seventh meeting between the pair, with Wilson winning the last match 10-9 to level the head-to-head record at 3-3.
