Teenager Jackson Page remains on course for his maiden tournament win after booking a last-16 clash against Scott Donaldson at the Paul Hunter Classic.
Page, who is just 17 years old and still an amateur, has been in sensational form in Germany and he opened his account with a convincing 4-0 victory against China’s Zhou Yuelong in round one. The Welshman then dispatched England’s Ian Burn 4-1 in the next stage of the tournament before making his highest career break of 141 when edging past Sam Baird 4-3 to book his place in the last 16.
Three-time world champion Mark Williams has often spoken about his fellow countryman’s ability and it appears big things are in the offing for Page if he continues his rapid rise through the ranks.
Next up for the Ebbw Vale-born star is a clash against Scotland’s Donaldson on Sunday and Page is the 3.30 outsider to pick up the win, while his opponent is the 1.30 favourite.
Donaldson has been made to work very hard to reach this stage of the tournament, having defeated Sam Craigie 4-2 before scraping past Niu Zhuang and Tom Ford 4-3 in both matches. Sunday marks the first meeting between Donaldson and Page.
Elsewhere, 2002 world champion Peter Ebdon had an impressive day after wins against Ben Jones, Andreas Ploner and Mark King King put him in the last 16.
The 47-year-old was recently critical of a new ‘slow play’ policy but he put his frustrations behind him to give himself a shot at reaching the quarter-finals. Ebdon will now take on Thepchaiya Un-Nooh on Sunday and the Englishman is the marginal outsider at 2.15, while his opponent is the 1.67 favourite.
