New coach the key for Maguire
Share:

Stephen Maguire claims new coach Chris Small has helped improve his game after he dumped Judd Trump out of the German Masters quarter-finals in Berlin on Friday night.

Trump was the favourite to progress to Saturday’s semi-finals as he was targeting back-to-back titles in the tournament, but Maguire came through to seal an impressive 5-2 win.

Glaswegian Maguire raced into a 3-1 lead courtesy of breaks of 87, 74 and 53 before Trump looked like mounting a comeback as a 69 break was enough to cut the deficit to just one frame.

However, Maguire’s 70 saw him restore his two-frame lead before the 37-year-old world number 15 edged the seventh to leave him firmly on course to win a sixth career ranking title, and his first since the Welsh Open six years ago.

Maguire is now looking forward to his last-four showdown against Kyren Wilson on Saturday night and feels linking up with Small has provided him with a new lease of life.

He told World Snooker: “I have just started working with a coach for the first time, Chris Small, and I felt the benefit out there tonight.

“You know what Judd can do to you, you just have to get in first and luckily I did tonight. And I played well this evening. I go for my shots, I always have – what is the point of attempting shots to nothing?

“The atmosphere here from the semis, when it is one table in front of 2,500 fans, is incredible. The time I got to the final against Ronnie O’Sullivan here in 2012 is still the best I have ever experienced.”

Maguire is now 2.40 to win his German Masters semi-final while Wilson, who defeated world champion Mark Williams 5-0 in his quarter-final tie, is 1.53.
