Money not the motivator for in-form Wilson
Share:

Kyren Wilson admits it isn’t “all about the money” as he continues his bid to win the Paul Hunter Classic in Germany. Wilson, beaten finalist in last season’s Dafabet Masters at Alexandra Palace, is the sole representative from the world’s top-16 players left standing in Furth.

Wilson expressed his disappointment that more of snooker’s top stars had not made the trip to Germany, with the likes of Mark Selby, Ronnie O’Sullivan, world champion Mark Williams and Crucible finalist John Higgins all posted missing for the season’s third ranking event.

World number nine Wilson beat Chen Feilong 4-2, Jake Nicholson 4-0 and Liam Highfield 4-0, making a century and seven more breaks over 50, in his three matches on Saturday to move into the last-16. He made a quick start again on Sunday, dispatching Hammad Miah 4-1 and Daniel Wells 4-3 to book his semi-final berth.

He’s inching closer to the second ranking-event win of his career and the 2015 Shanghai Masters winner will be less than concerned should he gain it, but Wilson does concede it is disappointing not to see more top stars in the event.

“It’s a bit of a shame,” he said. “I understand why some players don’t want to come. We’re lucky to have a tour with a lot of events worth a lot of money.

“So this one is down the pecking order, but it’s a great event, always full with fantastic German fans. It’s fun to play here and sometimes it’s not all about the money.”
