Kyren Wilson is one of a number of players scrapping for survival on day two of Championship League Group 2 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on Friday.
Beaten finalist in last year’s Dafabet Masters at Alexandra Palace, Wilson will hoping to sharpen his game as the world’s top-16 get set to return to the iconic London venue next weekend.
He suffered a chastising 3-0 loss to Judd Trump in his opener on Thursday, the pair having exchanged words publicly earlier in the season. Wilson responded by scrapping it out to overcome Belgium’s Luca Brecel 3-0 in match two of six, a contribution of 73 in frame two to overhaul a 55 from his opponent being the highlight.
However, despite an excellent 123 century break to force a decider, Wilson was undone when Jimmy Robertson made 92 to win his final game on Thursday 3-2.
Each Championship League group features seven players with each man playing the other six once in a round-robin basis. Every match is the best-of-five and the winner gains one point with the loser getting zero.
With three more points on offer on Friday, world number nine Wilson will still have clear designs on getting into the Group 2 knockouts. The top four advance into the knockouts – again first to three – with the group winner going forward to the Champions Group in March.
Ricky Walden, with two wins from three matches, is first up for Wilson on Friday before he goes on to face Anthony Hamilton and Jack Lisowski. Wilson is favourite at 1.57 to beat Walden in his Friday opener, with the latter priced at 2.30 to get the win that would inch him close to a knockout berth in Group 2.
