McGill sets up Robertson tie
Share:

Anthony McGill will play former world number one Neil Robertson in the English Open quarter-finals after overcoming Chinese teenager Yan Bingtao. Yan made a statement on Thursday with a 4-0 victory over defending champion Liang Wenbo, who beat Judd Trump 9-6 in the final last year to claim the only ranking title of his career to date.

The win over Wenbo set up a last-16 clash with Scotland’s McGill but the 17-year-old came unstuck as he went down 4-3 to the world number 16. McGill will now take on Robertson in the last eight after the Australian eased past India’s Aditya Mehta 4-1 in his first-round match. McGill is 7/4 to come out on top and claim a second successive victory over Robertson. The 26-year-old claimed his first victory over the Australian triple crown winner earlier this year in the Champions League, having lost the first five meetings between the two.

Robertson is rated at 4/9 to come out on top and 4/1 to win 5-2. Robertson claimed the Hong Kong Masters crown earlier this season but the world number eight hasn’t won a ranking title since the Riga Masters last year. Meanwhile, McGill has been in fine form this season and his march to the last eight in Barnsley is his fourth quarter-final of the season so far, with his best result coming in the Indian Open where he lost in the final.
