McGill bemused by 'bonus win'
Share:

Anthony McGill has described his victory over Michael Holt in the first round of the Dafabet English Open as a ‘bonus win’ due to the poor nature of his performance. The Scot has made an impressive start to the season, reaching the final of last month’s Indian Open, as well as the quarter-finals of the Riga Masters, World Open and European Masters.

However, he failed to discover his best form against world number 25 Holt, eventually scraping through 4-3, but he felt neither player really played to their full potential during the contest. “That’s just a bonus win because the way I played, I should have lost,” McGill said. “It was so bad! I was so nervous from the first shot to the last shot and I’m not normally nervous, so I don’t know why that was. “He looked nervous as well but I got to four first, so that’s what counts. I was basically just lucky that I won. If Michael had stepped up he would have beaten me easily and if I had stepped up, I would have done the same.”

McGill was eliminated at the second round stage of the inaugural English Open 12 months ago and he concedes that his decent run of results is likely to come to an end sooner rather than later. He added: “I have been playing pretty well but you can’t keep getting to the latter stages of tournaments – you’re going to stumble eventually.”
