Mark Williams eyes home triumph
Share:

Mark Williams is hoping to give the home fans something to cheer after booking his place in the third round of the Welsh Open. Williams was the last Welshman to win in Cardiff, but that was all the way back in 1999 and he and his countrymen have since had to watch on as players from the likes of Scotland, Ireland, England, Australia and China have lifted the trophy.

There are hopes the 42-year-old can end that run though, following a resurgent season that has seen him win both the Northern Ireland Open and the German Masters. The Welsh Wonder defeated Mark King 4-2 in the opening round and came from behind on Wednesday to beat India’s Aditya Mehta 4-3. With compatriot Matthew Stevens also looking good after wins over Ken Doherty and Scott Donaldson, hopes are high for a home win. The Ebbw Valley native is 11/2 to triumph at the Motorpoint Arena, with Stevens an outside shot at 66/1.

With Stevens having struggled at times in recent years, Williams admits he is feeling the pressure to perform. However, he is confident he can embrace the challenge and give the home fans something to cheer in the coming days at his national event. “We haven’t had much to cheer about at this event for a long time now,” he said. “Hopefully Matthew can have a good run as well, but it seems to be only me trying to get to the later stages. I don’t know why that is, but I can’t fly the flag forever.”
