Stephen Maguire managed to overcome Thepchaiya Un-Nooh in an epic final-frame decider to advance into the second round of the World Open in China.
World number 16 Maguire, who is 67.00 to win the 2019 World Championship, raced into a 2-0 lead after making impressive breaks of 87 and 76, and looked on course for a comfortable victory. However, Thailand’s Un-Nooh levelled the match by taking the next two frames – a break of 80 in the fourth frame a particular highlight – before his Scottish opponent made breaks of 109 and 55 to move one frame away from victory.
But Un-Nooh, who was beaten in the final of the Six-red World Championship last season, managed to level things up again to force a decider by taking frames seven and eight. It was a tense affair in the final frame but it was Maguire who was able to clinch the 5-4 victory, thanks to a break of 56, and he moves into the second round of the tournament where he will face Mike Dunn or Joe Perry.
Elsewhere, Welshman Jamie Jones eased into round two after a 5-2 win over China’s Zhou Yuelong. The 30-year-old from Neath, who made breaks of 56, 100, 73 and 53, will face the winner of Tuesday’s match between Mark Selby and Elliot Slessor. David Gilbert has also booked his place in the next round after he was awarded a walkover against Welshman Matthew Stevens. The Englishman will take on either Rory McLeod or Allister Carter in round two. McLeod and Carter go head-to-head on Monday afternoon and the latter, who is seeded ninth, is the 1.20 favourite to win, while his opponent is the 4.20 outsider.
