Kyren Wilson wants trophies not money
Share:

Kyren Wilson says he is determined to add more silverware to his CV ahead of simply pocketing prize money. The world number 14 has enjoyed a decent season and heads into this week’s Dafabet Masters at the Alexandra Palace in London in confident mood. Wilson says he is more laidback these days, and he hopes that attitude will help him win more trophies.

The 26-year-old Englishman has not won a major title since he defeated Judd Trump 10-9 in the 2015 Shanghai Masters final. He has since been beaten in three ranking tournament finals, losing to Anthony McGill in the 2015 Indian Open decider before also giving best to Ding Junhui in the World Open and Ronnie O’Sullivan in the English Open last year.

Wilson faces former World Championship finalist Barry Hawkins in the first round at Alexandra Palace on Tuesday and he says it is about prestige not prize money at this point in his career. “When you are reaching the latter stages of tournaments you are earning fantastic money now,” said Wilson. “The money is a bonus and it’s good to have nice things, but for me it’s about the trophies. “I’m trying to improve as a player. It has been really frustrating, chasing the second title. I won my first at a young age compared to others who are in their 40s. “So I’ve given myself every chance to win more. I am trying to take a more laidback approach and what will be will be.”

Wilson is 21/20 to defeat Hawkins on Tuesday, while he’s available at 33/1 to win the Masters outright.
