Kyren Wilson holds group advantage
Share:

Kyren Wilson leads the way in Group Three of the 2018 Championship League after winning three of his four matches on Monday. The Englishman, who is yet to win a ranking event title this season despite reaching the final of both the World and English Opens, has already twice missed out on qualifying for the Winners’ Group, but he appears to be the man to beat in Group Three.

The 26-year-old recorded narrow 3-2 victories over Tom Ford, Ryan Day and Ali Carter to race to the top of the group, while he also claimed the highest break of the day, as he racked up an impressive knock of 131 during his penultimate frame against Carter. The only blip on Wilson’s card during Monday’s action was a 3-0 reverse at the hands of Barry Hawkins, who is currently in a tie for second-place alongside Anthony Hamilton, Mark Allen and Carter, as all four men won two of their matches on Monday. Day and Ford currently sit bottom of the group, the latter losing all three of his matches to date, but there is still plenty of time for the group dynamic to change.

The top four players in the group come the end of play on Tuesday will advance through to the play-offs, where only the winner will secure a place in the next round. World number one Mark Selby and Chinese teenager Zhou Yuelong have already advanced through to the Winners’ Group, although that will not that will not be contested until the end of March.
