Joe Perry eliminated Judd Trump after he won the final four frames to emerge as a 6-2 winner at the China Championship.
Current world champion Judd Trump won the second and third frames with breaks of 60 and 102 to grab an early lead. However, he managed to score just 31 further points, while Perry continued to dominate and completed a surprise win.
A break of 92 in frame five sent Perry within two of the quarter-finals, and he finished the job to secure a clash with Iran’s elite snooker player Hossein Vafaei, who qualified for the quarter-final after a final-frame decider to defeat Anthony McGill 5-4.
Judd Trump began the tournament in a splendid fashion and was a strong favourite to win the competition in China. He convincingly won his first two matches in the tournament over Mike Dunn and Zhou Yuelong with 5-0 scores each.
However, his winning run was abruptly brought to an end by Joe “Gentleman” Perry. This defeat was Trump’s first in a ranking event after he was beaten in the first round of the China Open in April. After that loss in April, he has since gone on to win the World Championship and International Championship.
Joe Perry, who is currently ranked 17th in the was full of praises for Judd Trump.
Perry said after the match: “He is the man you won’t want to play at the moment. He is in terrific form. I played with him in Daqing, and he absolutely wiped the floor with me and pretty much the rest of the field. I am very happy to have come through.
“He is also playing with style as well. He isn’t just creeping over the line. You are going to be in for a hell of a match when you play with Judd Trump. He was not in his best form today, but I still knew I couldn’t afford to let my guard down and commit too many mistakes if I was going to win.”
