Jimmy White and Ken Doherty rolled back the years as they both made it through to the second round of qualifying for the German Masters. Englishman White, who is a six-time World Championship runner-up and has been ranked as high as number two in the world, pulled off a surprise win to reach the second qualifying round, as he defeated the talented Anthony McGill 5-3 on Wednesday.
The Whirlwind, who received a Main Tour invitation to compete on the circuit this year, recorded the only half-century break of what was a scrappy affair to maintain his impressive recent run of form, as he also captured the scalp of Ali Carter at the recent UK Championship. White is now just one win away from reaching the main draw of the German Masters for the second successive year, although he faces a tricky match against Yu Delu on Thursday. The 55-year-old is priced at 17/10 to win the match, while his Chinese opponent is on offer at 2/5.
Like White, 1997 world champion Doherty also needed an invitation to compete on the Main Tour this season and he has certainly justified that exemption, as he has consistently made it through to the main draw of ranking events. The 48-year-old saw off Switzerland’s Alexander Ursenbacher 5-3 in the first qualifying round on Wednesday, recording three half-century breaks in the process, but he faces a tough passage through to the main draw, as he must now take on world number 20 Martin Gould. Doherty is priced at 17/10 to emerge from that contest with a victory, while Gould, who won the German Masters in 2016, is available at 2/5.
