Chris Wakelin ousted fourth seed Luca Brecel to book his place in the last-16 stage of the Paul Hunter Classic and set up a clash with Welshman Lee Walker.
Wakelin, who turned professional in 2013, has enjoyed a positive start to the season after reaching the quarter-finals of the Riga Masters and he will be hoping to match that feat in Germany.
The Englishman produced a commanding performance to oust compatriot Luke Simmonds 4-1 in round one before beating Malta star Aaron Busuttil 4-2 in the next stage of the tournament. Next up for the 26-year-old was a difficult clash against fourth seed Brecel, who is world number 13 and broke his duck on tour at the 2017 China Championship, but the Belgian was sent packing in a surprise defeat.
Wakelin made breaks of 116, 55 and 144 to record a 4-2 victory and move into the last 16 of the Paul Hunter Classic, where Welshman Walker awaits. The 42-year-old defeated Frenchman Regis D’Anna, Welshman Jamie Jones and England’s Craig Steadman to move to within just one win of making the quarter-finals.
Wakelin is the 1.53 favourite to pick up the win on Sunday, while Walker is a 2.30 chance.
Elsewhere, Zhang Anda will take on Harvey Chandler in the last 16 and the Chinese ace is 1.40 to advance into the quarters, while his English opponent is priced at 2.70.
Anda dispatched George Pragnall, Dominic Dale and Michael White to reach this stage of the tournament, while Chandler was handed a walkover against Fan Zhengyi before defeating Alexander Ursenbacher and Mark Joyce.
