In-form Kyren Wilson is eyeing a slice of history at this week’s Shanghai Masters. Following his victory at the Six-Red World Championship in Bangkok, the Kettering cueman will bid to become the first player since John Higgins in 2001 to win three consecutive tour events.
He had already won the Paul Hunter Classic prior to his success at the weekend. Wilson, the world number eight, beat 2016 winner Ding Junhui 8-4 in the Six Red final and now heads to China brimming with confidence.
Following his last victory, Wilson said: “Given the standard these days it’s very difficult to win two events in a row. Winning has become a habit. On to Shanghai where I have fond memories.”
The 26-year-old reflected on his win by adding: “You have to play well to beat Ding and punish his mistakes. It’s nice to win a title here and beat him in the final. I have really enjoyed the week and I’ll definitely be back to defend the title next year.”
Wilson plays Liang Wenbo in round one on Monday with the winner to meet Judd Trump in the last 16. Meanwhile, Shaun Murphy has withdrawn from the Shanghai Masters due to personal reasons. His scheduled opponent, Stuart Bingham, will now receive a bye into the quarter-finals.
Bingham could meet defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan in the last eight. ‘The Rocket’ will first have to see off either Neil Robertson or Guo Hua. World number one Mark Selby will start his campaign against either Luca Brecel or Zhou Yuelong.
