Higgins and Trump set for China showdown
Share:

John Higgins and Judd Trump set up a mouthwatering quarter-final showdown at the Evergrande China Championship after respective wins over Scott Donaldson and Yan Bingtao.

The last-eight meeting in Guangzhou will be a repeat of their World Championship quarter-final at the Crucible in April, which the veteran Scot won 13-12 before eventually losing to Mark Williams in the final.

Higgins appeared set for an easy passage when he raced into a 3-0 lead against Donaldson in the last 16.

Despite a break of 53 in frame four, Higgins lost it and his fellow Scot then edged the fifth frame on a re-spotted black to close within one. Higgins needed a snooker in frame six as the match seemed set to go all square but he duly got his penalty points and pinched the frame to move within one of victory. Donaldson did close to 4-3 but a break of 52 would help Higgins over the line.

It was much less taxing for in-form Trump, with the world number five continuing his excellent play in China as he brushed Bingtao aside. Trump fired in breaks of 51, 83, 111, 55 and 56 in taking the five frames he needed, with his opponent kept scoreless in four of the six frames they contested.

Shaun Murphy, meanwhile, was a last-16 casualty, with the former world champion falling 5-3 against Lyu Haotian. The duo shared the first six frames before Haotian edged a tense seventh to move within one of his target. The world number 58 made his highest break of the match, 75, to move close to the winning line but Murphy countered and got the two snookers he needed to get back in the frame. A poor safety shot from the Magician afford Haotian the chance to pot the final red and clean up the colours for his win.
