Englishman David Gilbert made snooker history on Tuesday after making the 147th maximum break in the professional game.
In his Championship League match against Stephen Maguire at the Ricoh Arena on Tuesday, the world number 19 was trailing the Scot 1-0 in the group stage but hit the requisite 15 red and blacks with all the colours to ink his name into the record books.
Gilbert had already hit two century breaks in the group stages of the knockout tournament but saved his best for the match against Maguire which is the first 147 showing of 2019 and the 147th in professional competitions since Steve Davis scored the first one back in 1982.
However, Maguire won the following two frames to take a 3-1 victory and despite qualifying for the group semi-finals, the 37-year-old East Midlander was whitewashed by Barry Hawkins.
It is Gilbert’s second ever maximum with his first coming in the 2015 version of the tournament, which pits 25 of the world’s best players against each other in short format group matches, with knockouts to decide on a winners’ group.
Gilbert’s elimination from group five, which was won by world number one Mark Selby, means he will play in group six today and tomorrow along with three other player knocked out from group five and three players featuring in the tournament for the first time this year.
His first match will be another contest against Stephen Maguire with Gilbert available at 2.20 and the Maverick at 1.67 to win.
