David Gilbert is closing in on a place in his first World Championship semi-final after establishing a 10-6 lead over Kyren Wilson on Tuesday.
World number 16 Gilbert, who beat defending champion Mark Williams 13-9 to secure his place in the last eight for the first time, certainly looks at home on the Crucible table, recording nine half-century breaks in his last four match to date.
There was nothing to separate the two players during the opening session of the match, as they were all level at 4-4, but Gilbert took control of proceedings during the evening session, winning three of the opening four frames with breaks of 82, 78 and 102 to establish a 7-5 lead.
Wilson won the next frame to tighten things up once again, but Gilbert then rattled off the next three with runs of 72, 58 and 60 to move within three frames of victory.
The Tamworth potter is priced at 1.20 to go on and win the match, while Wilson, who is bidding to reach the semi-finals for the second consecutive year, is available at 4.33.
Gary Wilson also looks well placed to reach a first World Championship semi-final, as he leads two-time finalist Ali Carter 9-7.
World number 32 Wilson had never previously won a match at the Crucible before this year’s tournament, but victories over Luca Brecel and Mark Selby seem to have taken him to a new level.
The 33-year-old recorded three century breaks en route to establishing his advantage, including two runs of 134, and he will fancy his chances of closing out the victory having won his only previous meetings with Carter at last year’s China Open.
Carter should not be underestimated, however, as he is bidding to reach the one-table format at the Crucible for a fourth time.
