Former world champion Peter Ebdon is holding onto the belief that he can compete with the world’s best players ahead of the Evergrande China Championship in Guangzhou. Ebdon is into his 27th season among the professional snooker ranks and he admits it is a challenge to remain competitive with the younger generation. “I still feel I’m capable of doing it. My form in the last few seasons has been very up and down. I don’t think I’ve been getting the results I deserve, despite working hard,” he said. Ebdon faces Anthony Hamilton in his opener in China on Wednesday.
He is 7/5 to prevail, with Hamilton favourite at 4/7. The veteran potter intends to give himself at least two more years on the main snooker circuit before considering any possibility of retirement. He still has clear designs on achieving another top level tournament victory has dropped a hint that, should be manage it, he might be tempted to call time on his career there and then. “The idea is to give myself another two seasons and then I can re-assess the situation with my career. I’m just going to try to work as hard as I can.
It would be nice to win again and perhaps it would be nice one day to bow out with a win,” added Ebdon. Hamilton is going to present a tough opening test in China, according to Ebdon. “He won his first tournament last year and he is playing well. He’s been a top class player for long, long time. He scores heavily and his safety is good. I’m going to have to play well to win. He will be a strong favourite,” he added. Ebdon is 7/1 to win the match 5-2.
