Defending champion seeks European Masters place
Share:

Judd Trump has won the European Masters in each of the last two years but he must see off Martin O’Donnell if he is to book his place in the main draw this time around.

The majority of players have already secured their place in the first round of this week’s tournament in Belgium, but Trump’s qualifying clash with fellow Englishman O’Donnell will take place on Monday.

Trump certainly has a great affinity with the event as he beat Stuart Bingham 9-7 in the final 12 months ago, while he also won the tournament in 2016, edging a deciding frame to beat Ronnie O’Sullivan 9-8. By contrast, world number 67 O’Donnell has only once qualified for the main draw of the event, reaching the second round in 2017, although he will head into this match following his impressive run to the quarter-finals of last week’s China Championship.

Unsurprisingly Trump is the heavy favourite to book his place in the main draw at 1.18, although O’Donnell is available at 4.75 to spring a surprise.

The English pair’s clash is not the only qualifier taking place on Monday, as world number 12 and home favourite Luca Brecel is also looking to secure his place in the first round when he takes on Wales’ Daniel Wells.

The first round itself is also due to get underway on Monday with big names such as 2015 world champion Stuart Bingham and world number 16 Anthony McGill in action. Bingham will face off against world number 45 Chris Wakelin, while McGill will take on his fellow Scot Chris Totten, who is 69 places below him in the world rankings.
