Cope still fighting for tour card
Share:

Jamie Cope’s quest for a two-year card on the main tour continues on Tuesday when he takes on Callum Lloyd in round three at Q School 3 at the Meadowside Leisure Centre in Burton. Cope, who has had two stints on the main tour from 2002-2004 and 2005-2017, came agonisingly close to securing his place back on the professional circuit at Q School 2 recently.

The Englishman, who has made three 147 breaks during his career, only needed one more win to secure his card but he was ousted by Northern Ireland’s Jordan Brown in the quarter-finals. It is now last chance saloon for the 32-year-old and he will have to get past Lloyd, who is yet to go past round three at Q School, on Tuesday to keep his hopes alive. Cope is yet to pick up his cue in Burton after his two opponents for R1 and R2, the American pair Ahmed Elsayed and Corey Deuel, failed to turn up for their matches.

Welshman Lloyd defeated Romanian Mihai Vladu 4-1 in the first stage before being awarded a walkover against England’s Mike Finn in the next round. This will be the first meeting between Cope and Lloyd as both men look to move one victory closer to a spot on the main tour. Elsewhere, in round two, Englishman Barry Pinches, who has one minor ranking tournament win to his name, takes on compatriot Callum Costello.

The 47-year-old, a quarter-finalist at the 2003 UK Championship and 2005 Grand Prix, is the 1.33 favourite to progress whilst his opponent is a 3.00 chance. Welshman Ben Jones is also in action on Monday as he takes on China’s Wu Shengguang for a place in round three.
