Classy Lisowski too strong for Maguire
Share:

Jack Lisowski will contest the first ranking event final of his career at the Kaspersky Riga Masters after overcoming Stephen Maguire in a high-calibre last-four tussle. Lisowski had to be at his best to take care of Scotland’s Maguire, who came into the match knowing his last-eight win over Masters finalist Kyren Wilson was enough to see him return to snooker’s top-16.

Maguire had played well in that 4-2 success earlier on Sunday, with a high contribution of 92. Lisowski meanwhile had experienced few problems as he overcame former world champion Graeme Dott in straightforward fashion, notching three half-century breaks in a 4-0 win.

It was the Englishman that made the brighter start in the semi-final in Latvia, breaks of 99 and 81 moving him ahead. Maguire had his chances in frame three, but it once more went Lisowski’s way 80-51 and that gave him clear breathing space. A run of 76 in frame four gave Maguire some hope he might find a way back into the game but Lisowski was playing the more fluent snooker and another pair of 50-plus breaks pushed him over the finish line.

Having disposed of Dott in the last-eight, another former Crucible champion in the shape of 2010 winner Neil Robertson stands between Lisowski and a maiden ranking tournament win. The Aussie, winner in Riga two years ago, dispatched Stuart Carrington with a 5-0 whitewash in their semi-final meeting and is on course to become the first multiple winner of the Riga Masters. Robertson is 1.57 to win the Riga Masters final, while Lisowski can be backed at 2.30.
