Carter digs deep to overcome Dott
Share:

England’s Ali Carter showed tremendous determination on Sunday to beat Graeme Dott in a thrilling match at the World Championships. Carter endured a slow start on Saturday and started Sunday’s session with work to do, trailing 6-3. However, he won eight of the last 10 frames to reach the last 16 at Dott’s expense.

Sunday’s win will give Carter plenty of confidence, especially after he was dumped out of the China Open in the first round by Gary Wilson. Speaking after his win, he told World Snooker: “I have been through a lot in my life. I have been very ill and overcome it and I wouldn’t have got over that if I didn’t have that personality and fight in me. I used that today.” Carter’s reward is a match against Ronnie O’Sullivan, who remains 6/4 favourite after his win over Stephen Maguire.

O’Sullivan had been behind at one point on Sunday but he rallied to win 10-7 as he his fabulous season continues. The shock of the day came in the match between Lyu Haotian and Marco Fu, with the former winning 10-5 in his first match at the World Championships. Fu has missed the last three months after having laser eye surgery but he looked rusty and his opponent is now 100/1 to go all the way in Sheffield. Kyren Wilson also won on Sunday after a thrilling 10-3 victory over Matthew Stevens and the Englishman is now priced at 14/1 to win the event.
