Luca Brecel produced a stunning comeback to defeat Alan McManus in the second round of the European Masters, setting up a clash with Anthony Hamilton for a place in the last eight.
Brecel, who dispatched Luo Honghao 4-2 in the opening round, looked to be heading for the exit door after falling 3-0 down against Scotland’s McManus, who made breaks of 79 and 66 in the first two frames. However, the ‘Belgian Bullet’ produced a mighty comeback to take the next four frames without reply, clinching a sensational 4-3 victory and booking his spot in the next stage of the tournament.
The 23 year-old will go head-to-head with former German Masters champion Anthony Hamilton, who made an excellent 129 century en route to beating Malaysian Thor Chuan Leong 4-2.
World number 12 Brecel won their first meeting back in 2011 – thrashing the Englishman 4-0 – but the next four matches have gone the way of the 47-year-old, who has won 5-3, 6-3, 4-2 and 1-0.
The Belgian, who landed the China Championship last year, is the 1.67 favourite to pick up the win whilst his opponent, who has failed to make it past round three in any tournament this season, is priced at 2.15.
As mentioned, Hamilton has won one of the previous five encounters 4-2 and it is 5.50 for that scoreline to be repeated again, whilst Brecel is priced at 7.50 to whitewash the Englishman 4-0.
The winner will take on either England’s Jack Lisowski or China’s Zhang Anda in the next round, with the duo going head-to-head for the first time since last year’s European Masters on Thursday.
