Stuart Bingham admits his game ‘clicked’ and he can go into this week’s Tour Championship – where he faces Ronnie O’Sullivan – with confidence after winning the Gibraltar Open on Sunday.
The former world champion produced a superb burst of scoring to beat defending champion Ryan Day 4-1 after dropping the first frame.
Day made an 83 clearance after Bingham had missed a red to the middle pocket as he attempted to keep a maximum break going.
But the 42-year-old hit back immediately with a clearance of 100 to level the scores in frame two before the Basildon potter made breaks of 84 and 103 to move within sight of victory.
The fifth frame was a tighter affair, but Bingham held his nerve on the colours to take the £25,000 prize.
“The way it started I had a chance for a max, went for it and missed a red in the middle and Ryan made a great dish and I thought I was in trouble,” Bingham said at the trophy presentation.
“But luckily for me my game clicked, I made a nice 100 and I’m over the moon to win.”
Bingham can now focus on the Tour Championship, having secured his spot at the Llandudno event earlier in the day.
David Gilbert’s quarter-final defeat in Gibraltar meant that Bingham and Kyren Wilson take their places in the eight-man event with a top prize of just over £150,000.
Bingham is seeded seven and will meet ‘The Rocket’ over a best-of-17 frames quarter-final clash.
O’Sullivan, who is 1.22 favourite in the match betting, has won their last four matches – all over either the best-of-11 or best-of-seven formats.
But Bingham, the 4.00 underdog, did get the better of the five-time world champion in their Crucible quarter-final of 2015, winning 13-9.
In the other last eight ties, Wilson goes up against top seed Mark Allen, Neil Robertson faces Mark Selby and Judd Trump plays Mark Williams.
