World champion Mark Williams, Masters holder Judd Trump and Kyren Wilson were all knocked out of the Welsh Open in the second round.
Welshman Williams added to his ranking titles collection by winning the World Open earlier this season but has struggled since, managing just two quarter-final appearances in 12 attempts.
The 43-year-old survived a scare in the first round after he overcame compatriot Kishan Hirani with a deciding frame win before his luck ran out in the second round.
Williams went down 4-2 to Zhang Anda and faces a race against time to rediscover his form ahead of his World Championship defence at the end of the campaign.
Trump has arguably been the form player this season and won the World Grand Prix prior to the tournament in Cardiff, having grabbed a second Triple Crown title by seeing off Ronnie O’Sullivan in the final earlier this year.
The Bristolian went down 4-2 to home hopeful Duane Jones at the Motorpoint Arena while Wilson lost a deciding frame to Joe O’Connor.
Williams is 19.00 to win the World Championship outright and Trump can be backed at 5.00.
Mark Selby secured his place in the third round in convincing fashion with a 4-0 win over Adam Duffy while Ronnie O’Sullivan also progressed with a 4-2 success over Yuan Sijun.
O’Sullivan managed a break of 120 during the victory and is now just seven centuries short of a career milestone 1,000th hundred.
