Big guns kick off World Open quest
Share:

Neil Robertson, Judd Trump and Mark Selby are all in action on Tuesday as the trio begin their challenge for World Open glory in China.

World number one Selby, who lost in the final of this event in 2014, has been drawn against fellow Englishman Elliot Slessor in round one and it could be a tricky encounter. The three-time world champion defeated Luke Simmonds 5-3 to make the main stage of the draw and he will be confident against an opponent he is yet to lose a frame to.

Of the two previous matches, Selby has defeated Slessor 5-0 and 4-0 although the latter heads into Tuesday’s contest off the back of his best season to date. The 23-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Northern Ireland Open and the Indian Open quarter-finals in the previous campaign, highlighting the vast improvements he has made to his game. Selby is the firm 1.12 favourite to a win, while Slessor is 5.50 to cause an upset.

Fourth seed Trump also gets his quest for glory underway when he takes on fellow Englishman Martin O’Donnell, who is yet to land his maiden tournament win. This will be the fifth meeting between the pair, with Trump winning all four previous encounters. O’Donnell is the 5.25 outsiders to pick up the win, while the ‘Juddernaut’ is the heavy favourite at 1.14 to progress.

Australian Robertson, seeded eighth, opens his tournament with a first-round clash against Hong Kong’s Andy Lee. The 36-year-old from Melbourne has already landed a title this season, the Riga Masters, and he is fancied to continue his red-hot form in China. Lee, 37, is returning to the professional scene for the second time in his career and he will need to be at his best to get one over Robertson.
